Archaeological ruins uncovered in the city and surroundings prove existence of a built up area already in pre-Roman Age.
Comune di Canicattì
The name of Canicattì is probably of Arabic origin: it should derivate from Latin form Candicattinum, and in turn with Arabic root Handaq at-tin, that is “mud ditch” or “clay ditch”; this toponym uncovered in an geographical map of Sicily during Saracen domination period.
